Do you have to be a 501(c)3 organization to apply for a grant?
Community Foundations generally only make grants to certified nonprofit organizations.
Does this new initiative mean the foundations have permanently expanded their traditional funding distribution areas?
No, each foundation is maintaining its traditional boundaries for its discretionary funds. But individual funds at a community foundation, such as the TRIAD Fund, may have geographic distribution areas or funding guidelines different from those of the foundation as a whole.
Why do you need an organization's Financial Statements in order to award a grant?
Board and staff of community foundations serve as stewards of our generous donors’ funds and, therefore, must have confidence that the investments we make in organizations are sound. We review Financial Statements and the IRS Form 990 to determine the financial stability of each organization submitting a grant application.
We are a small nonprofit and have not had an audit yet. May we still apply?
Yes, explain the situation in your application and send what financial information you do have.
May we apply to more than one foundation?
Absolutely, but you must apply separately to each foundation. Receiving a grant from one foundation does not guarantee that you will be successful with another. Each foundation has assessed the needs within its geographic area and may have different funding priorities.
While we don't currently provide services to military personnel, we could if the funding were available. Are we still eligible?
Yes, just make sure you look at all the costs associated with expanding service delivery and reflect that in your grant application. Successful applications will demonstrate that your agency is currently serving military personnel and their families in Texas or has the experience to address an unmet need.
Is there a minimum or maximum amount of funding I can request in my application?
There is no minimum or maximum amount that can be requested. Applicants should keep in mind that each community foundation will distribute approximately $2,300,000 in 2007 throughout the geographic area it represents.
Can we apply for a multi-year grant?
Grants can cover services for as much as two years from the time the grant is awarded.
Can we apply for multiple grants for different programs?
Yes, but a separate application form must be submitted for each program. Some of the application information is the same, but the purpose, program explanation, budget and outcome expectations will be different for each.
May we submit a second application to renew funds or expand funding after the initial funding has been spent?
Yes, if you can show that additional funding is warranted by continued or additional demands for services.
If our organization does not have an Executive Director, may we submit the application with only the signature of the Board President?
If your organization does not have an Executive Director, two officers of the organization board must sign the application.
I have questions about the grant application. How can I get some help?
Each foundation will present several grant making seminars; check the website for those dates. You may also contact the foundation’s representative, identified in the application or on the website.
