The Dallas Foundation

Here for Good

Founded in 1929, The Dallas Foundation is the oldest community foundation in Texas. With more than $176 million in assets, The Foundation serves as a resource, leader and catalyst for philanthropy by providing donors with flexible means of making gifts to charitable causes that enhance our community. The Dallas Foundation was among the first community foundations in the country to comply with the Council on Foundation’s National Standards. This means the Foundation has demonstrated legal, ethical, and effective operating practices that demonstrate transparency and financial transparency to meet today’s increased public scrutiny of foundation practices.

The Dallas Foundation distributed more than $30.4 million in grants in 2008 through the following types of funds:

  • Donor- Advised Funds enable donors to participate actively by recommending grants to specific charitable organizations throughout the US
  • Designated Funds are created to benefit a specific agency or agencies
  • Community Funds benefit a civic project
  • Field-of-Interest Funds benefit a defined charitable activity or cause
  • Scholarship Funds can supply financial support for students at any level of education
  • Agency Endowment Funds are permanent endowment funds set up by a nonprofit agency to provide ongoing support for the organization
  • Unrestricted Funds benefit Dallas County in the area of arts, education, health and social services

The TRIAD Fund was created through a generous grant from the California Community Foundation. You can support nonprofit agencies in North and East Texas who are assisting military personnel serving in Iraq or Afghanistan and their families by making a tax-deductible donation to The TRIAD Fund at The Dallas Foundation.

In addition to making grants, The Dallas Foundation has also undertaken a number of important initiatives to benefit the community, including creating the Dallas Indicators project which tracks data on a number of issues for the use of nonprofits and community leaders; leading the effort to preserve the outdoor sculpture owned by the City of Dallas; and most recently, leading the effort to improve early childhood development in Dallas for children ages 0-5. The first program selected for funding is the Nurse-Family Partnership in Dallas County. This innovative program, selected using data from the Dallas Indicators, pairs a seasoned nurse practitioner with a first-time, low income mother from pregnancy through the child's third birthday to improve pregnancy outcome, child health and family self-sufficiency. The YWCA is the service provider for this pilot program.
