San Antonio Foundation

Girl by sign that says to support the troopsThe San Antonio Area Foundation, established in 1964, is a fitting tribute to Nat and Mannie Goldsmith, whose philanthropic vision for San Antonio inspired its creation – spurring growth and support for the arts, humanities, education, health and environment throughout San Antonio, Bexar County and the surrounding area. Mannie Goldsmith was so inspired by his brother Nat Goldsmith’s vision, compassion and love for community that he wanted to create a memorial to honor him. Mannie established the Nat Goldsmith Memorial Trust as the founding trust that would inaugurate the San Antonio Area Foundation. That first year, the fund had total assets of $21,019 and distributed $868 to charitable causes. The San Antonio Area Foundation has now grown to more than $163 million in assets and has distributed more than $100 million in the form of grants and scholarships.

The San Antonio Area Foundation continues to focus upon its mission of helping donors achieve their charitable goals for the greater benefit of the community by:

  • Professionally managing and distributing revenues – and portions of the principal when permitted – from charitable contributions and bequests in a way that’s consistent with the specific requests or areas of interest set forth by the donor.
  • Maintaining and enhancing educational, social, cultural, health and civic resources of the community through support of qualified nonprofit organizations.
  • Providing philanthropic leadership to improve the quality of the life in the community.

In June 2006, the San Antonio Area Foundation was recognized by the Council on Foundations for operating in accordance with the National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations, indicating that the Area Foundation has implemented legal, ethical and effective operational practices that demonstrate its transparency and financial responsibility.

The San Antonio Area Foundation aspires to significantly enhance the quality of life of our community by providing outstanding service to donors, producing significant asset growth, strengthening community collaboration and managing an exemplary grants program.
